Open source SCADA implementation and PMU integration for power system monitoring and control applications

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents the implementation of an Open Source SCADA system in a laboratory and discusses methods for PMU data integration into SCADA. SCADA BR is a webbrowser based SCADA that enables the user to access monitoring, control and automation equipment over multiple protocols. For implementation, protection relays from SEL are configured as DNP3 outstations to act as slaves and SCADA BR which is installed in one of the workstations in the laboratory acts as master. The evaluation of SCADA BR has… Show more

“…The components are also compatible with related process facilities and components from various vendors. Therefore, the consumer is not beholden to a single manufacturer/supplier which is one of the key features of an open source system [4,12,13]. Table 1 below shows the cost of each of the components and the overall cost of the designed SCADA system.…”

“…A SCADA system is a collection of both software and hardware components that allows for the supervision and control of need to deploy SCADA solutions to monitor and control their distributed facilities, such as companies in the power sector or renewable generation systems, these commercial SCADA solutions do not represent a profitable choice. With the commercial systems, there is also the problem of interoperability with the existing infrastructures, for example power electronic converters in a power system [12]. Seamless communication among devices in modern power systems is the key to successful SCADA implementation [13,14].…”

“…Moreover, using interoperability of power system protection by using SCADA and PMU is shown to bring advantages in order to achieve EMS-SCADA functionalities [8]. Integration between SCADA and PMU data is also presented in other papers, such as [9], using an open source SCADA implementation.…”

“…The AdvancedHMI project [40]-based on Microsoft .NET-allows the user to build a dedicated customized HMI and develop additional modules, relying on the support of a large community. In terms of open source solution, we highlight ScadaBR [41], which allows users to view, record, graph, create alarms on sensors data, RTUs and PLCs. This solution is supported by major industry standard protocols.…”
