Opening the window to lifelong learning: Applying the Johari Window framework in engineering communication curriculum

Abstract: Providing long-term access to writing and communication support can be a significant challenge for engineering faculties. When writing instruction is restricted to just one semester, the challenge for instructors, as a result, is to utilize the short time they have with engineering students in ways that will help students to self-initiate long-term communication learning. An educational tool that shows promise in achieving this goal is the Johari Window-a longestablished psychological concept that is heavily e… Show more

“…For example, all acknowledged that the NED was a mentor for the TD and that the Board and company now operated in a more structured way. They all accepted that the NED's personal style was one of managing by consultation and persuasion and that this reduced board conflict: 6.3 Triadic sets: T 1 , T 2 , T 3 , T 4 Triadic set examples can be seen in the Appendix, where the MD, NED and FD acknowledged that the business was to become a family business (T 2 ). The MD, NED SME top management team and FD (T 2 ) also acknowledged that the financial consultant recommended by the bank had given the company bad advice.…”

“…An unexpected result and difficult to explain to the information available, may be related to the limitations in the research. Within the theme, Cassidy studies the (Cassidy, 2014) provides an overview of each area of the Johari Window adapting the proposed theme and as a result all the discussion the article suggests the use of this model for improving communication between the engineering students. It is also highlighted in the article, the importance of greater public area within the model and the search for feedback to facilitate the opening of the participants involved.…”

“…Qualitative data was transcribed, coded and classified in themes for analysis using NVivo software. The qualitative findings related to social and environmental aspects were consolidated into four quadrants -"known", "unknown", "hidden" and the "blind spot" -based on the Johari Window model, a well-known instrument for self-assessment (Cassidy 2014;Vorce & Fragasso 2016), building awareness (Mahoney 2019;South 2007), facilitating individual self-disclosure (Nofriza 2017) and understanding different perspectives (Beck 1994;Berland 2017). This technique is similarly useful to raising awareness and investigating less visible issues such as the attitudes, knowledge and motives of e-waste recycling workers.…”
