Operando high-pressure investigation of size-controlled CuZn catalysts for the methanol synthesis reaction

Abstract: Although Cu/ZnO-based catalysts have been long used for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, open questions still remain regarding the role and the dynamic nature of the active sites formed at the metal-oxide interface. Here, we apply high-pressure operando spectroscopy methods to well-defined Cu and Cu0.7Zn0.3 nanoparticles supported on ZnO/Al2O3, γ-Al2O3 and SiO2 to correlate their structure, composition and catalytic performance. We obtain similar activity and methanol selectivity for Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 and CuZn… Show more

“…This was both supported by experimental and theoretical studies. Note that the issue of active site motifs is still controversially discussed in the literature [12a,17,22,23] . While the preparation of our inverse catalyst allows for the identification of the formation of a CuZn surface alloy, correlating any surface structure with methanol syntheses activity warrants operando studies.…”

“…Some suitable materials for X-ray windows, such as polyimide films like Kapton, metals like beryllium, and substances like glassy carbon and diamond, owing to their low energy absorption, have been described in literature. Despite of the toxicity of beryllium, we chose this material because it has been successfully applied in other tubular reactor setups [26,27] and Kapton cannot withstand high temperature, glassy carbon is brittle and diamond windows are expensive.…”

“…Bandgap alteration is the most extensively explored over oxygen-deficient “black titania,” where on reduction, the bandgap reduces from 3.2 eV to approximately 1.6 eV ( Han et al., 2016 ). Besides TiO 2 , several other oxide semiconductors, such as ZnO ( Divins et al., 2021 ) CeO 2 ( Zhang et al, 2020 ), MnO 3 ( He et al., 2019 ) and WO 3 ( Shi et al., 2019 ), which constitute active catalyst supports in CO 2 reduction catalysis, are susceptible to partial reduction under mild conditions.…”
