“…Therefore the pre-ionization of the gas by some external source might be beneficial. This is shown in the papers of Stallings et al (1979), Ruden et al (1987), Baksht, Russkikh, and Fedyunin (1995), Baksht, Russkikh, and Chagin (1997), and Rousskikh et al (1999).…”

“…The effect of the prepulse is determined by its time duration and its voltage. In particular, in Baksht, Russkikh, and Fedyunin (1995) the prepulse (1.5 s, 1 kV) did not cause a breakdown because the axial line density n 0 L Ͻ3.6ϫ10 15 cm Ϫ2 was well below the Paschen optimum for Ar. Such a prepulse would have caused a breakdown of Ar with a density an order of magnitude higher.…”

“…To improve the quality of implosion, gas-puff loads with thicker shells were subsequently developed. Various methods such as puff-on-puff, inclusion of axial magnetic field, conducting outer shells, shear stabilization and spinning gas-puff have also been employed [10,[12][13][14][15] to curtail R-T instability development without degrading the final compression of the pinch plasma. In order to minimize the effect of the R-T instability on the implosion dynamics and to achieve the plasma parameters of interest, we have employed a theoretical model for a multicascade liner system and found that for an optimum value of the shell thickness the maximum number density of the order of 10 3 n 0 and temperature of the order of 36 keV are achievable [16].…”
