Operational calibration of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-8 and -9 imagers and sounders

Abstract: We describe the operational in-orbit calibration of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-8 and-9 imagers and sounders. In the infrared channels the calibration is based on observations of space and an onboard blackbody. The calibration equation expresses radiance as a quadratic in instrument output. To suppress noise in the blackbody sequences, we filter the calibration slopes. The calibration equation also accounts for an unwanted variation of the reflectances of the instruments' scan … Show more

“…A full description of the dataset and the cloud retrieval algorithm can be found in an earlier publications (14,20,21). The sounding data used for the retrieval of atmospheric instability conditions come from the Rondonian Boundary Layer Experiment (RBLE-3) as part of the Anglo-Brazilian Amazonian Climate Observation Study (ABRACOS) (22) during 13-26 August 1994.…”

“…where R is the radiance from the scene, X is the signal output for each band, q, m, and b are the coefficients [28]. The radiance R for a band and detector is the average of spectral radiance over the spectral response function as shown in Section 1 for the calculation of band average.…”
