Operational Strategy, R&D and Intra-metropolitan Clustering in a Polycentric Structure: The Advanced Electronics Industries of the Los Angeles Basin

Abstract: The multiple clustering of economic activities is one of the most distinctive characteristics of a polycentric metropolitan area. The relationship between intra-metropolitan location, research and development (R&D), operational strategy and production is analysed, to determine whether spatial clusters are more supportive of R&D than non-clustered locations. Two major operational strategies commonly utilised in advanced electronics production, outsourcing and the use of just-in-time (JIT) production met… Show more

“…Research has shown an increase in innovating patenting activity for firms within a cluster (Baptista and Swann, 1998;Beaudry, 2001). Others do not find any increase in innovation (Suarez-Villa and Walrod, 1997;Alsleben, 2005).…”

“…Moreover, these firms establish network relationships (i.e. alliances, join-ventures, collaborative research and so on) with customers and suppliers Even more than that, a few studies have shown that not locating in a cluster may actually hold some advantages, by allowing firms to safeguard their privacy and to introduce new products earlier than their competitors (Suarez-Villa and Walrod, 1997;Oakey and Cooper, 1989). In particular, Suarez-Villa and Walrod found that non-clustered electronic establishments spent on average 3.6 times more on R&D and employed 2.5 times more R&D personnel than clustered ones.…”

“…This format is perfect for CMSA, obviating the need for case studies (for good reviews, see Suarez-Villa and Walrod, 1997;Malecki, 1986) and adding the benefit of econometric precision to the wonderful work of Sokoloff (1988) and Suarez-Villa (1993). CMSA has been used exclusively in international trade circles, to investigate whether changes in trade patterns are associated with variations specific to the economic sector of production or geographic destination (Laursen, 2000;Boltho, 1996;Balassa, 1979;Leamer and Stern, 1970;Renten and Duffy, 1970).…”
