Social media are now a routine part of political campaigns all over the world. However, studies of the impact of campaigning on social platform have thus far been limited to cross-section datasets from one election period which are vulnerable to unobserved variable bias. Hence empirical evidence on the effectiveness of political social media activity is thin. We address this deficit by analysing a novel panel dataset of political Twitter activity in the 2015 and 2017 elections in the United Kingdom. We find that Twitter based campaigning does seem to help win votes, a finding which is consistent across a variety of different model specifications including a first difference regression. The impact of Twitter use is small in absolute terms, though comparable with that of campaign spending. Our data also support the idea that effects are mediated through other communication channels, hence challenging the relevance of engaging in an interactive fashion.

Over the last years, the prodigious success of online social media sites has marked a shift in the way people connect and share information. Coincident with this trend is the proliferation of location-aware devices and the consequent emergence of user-generated geospatial data. From a social scientific perspective, these location data are of incredible value as it can be mined to provide researchers with useful information about activities and opinions across time and space. However, the utilization of geo-located data is a challenging task, both in terms of data management and in terms of knowledge production, which requires a holistic approach. In this paper, we implement an integrated knowledge discovery in cyberspace framework for retrieving, processing and interpreting Twitter geolocated data for the discovery and classification of the latent opinion in user-generated debates on the internet. Text mining techniques, supervised machine learning algorithms and a cluster spatial detection technique are the building blocks of our research framework. As real-word example, we focus on Twitter conversations about Brexit, posted on Uk during the 13 months before the Brexit day. The experimental results, based on various analysis of Brexit-related tweets, demonstrate that different spatial patterns can be identified, clearly distinguishing pro- and anti-Brexit enclaves and delineating interesting Brexit geographies.

Online social media platforms play an important role in political communication where users can freely express and exchange their political opinion. Political entities have leveraged social media platforms as essential channels to disseminate information, interact with voters, and even influence public opinion. For this purpose, some organizations may create one or more accounts to join online political discussions. Using these accounts, they could promote candidates and attack competitors. To avoid such misleading speeches and improve the transparency of the online society, spotting such malicious accounts and understanding their behaviors are crucial issues. In this paper, we aim to use network-based analysis to sense influential human-operated malicious accounts who attempt to manipulate public opinion on political discussion forums. To this end, we collected the election-related articles and malicious accounts from the prominent Taiwan discussion forum spanning from 25 May 2018 to 11 January 2020 (the election day). We modeled the discussion network as a multilayer network and used various centrality measures to sense influential malicious accounts not only in a single-layer but also across different layers of the network. Moreover, community analysis was performed to discover prominent communities and their characteristics for each layer of the network. The results demonstrate that our proposed method can successfully identify several influential malicious accounts and prominent communities with apparent behavior differences from others.
