Opossum Aldehyde Dehydrogenases: Evidence for Four ALDH1A1-like Genes on Chromosome 6 and ALDH1A2 and ALDH1A3 Genes on Chromosome 1

Abstract: Evidence is presented for six opossum ALDH1A genes, including four ALDH1A1-like genes on chromosome 6 and ALDH1A2- and ALDH1A3-like genes on chromosome 1. Predicted structures for the opossum aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) subunits and the intron-exon boundaries for opossum ALDH genes showed a high degree of similarity with other mammalian ALDHs. Phylogenetic analyses supported the proposed designation of these opossum class 1 ALDHs as ALDH1A-like, ALDH1A2-like, and ALDH1A3-like and are therefore likely to play… Show more

“…In silico methods were used to predict the primary, secondary, and tertiary structures for opossum ALDH3 isozymes and gene locations for opossum ALDH3-like genes, using data from the opossum genome sequence (Mikkelsen et al 2007). This paper extends previous studies that examined the tissue and subcellular distribution and biochemical properties of opossum ALDHs (Holmes et al , 1991 and the predicted structures and properties of opossum ALDH1-like genes and proteins (Holmes 2009). Phylogenetic analyses also describe the relationships and potential evolutionary origins of multiple opossum ALDH3A-like genes and an ALDH3B-like gene in the opossum.…”

“…Structures for vertebrate ALDH3 isozymes and gene locations for ALDH3-like genes were obtained using data from the respective genome sequences. This paper extends previous studies which examined the structures and properties of opossum (Monodelphis domestica) ALDH3-like genes and proteins [15,16]. Phylogenetic analyses also describe the relationships and potential origins of ALDH3A-like and ALDH3B-like genes during mammalian and vertebrate evolution.…”

“…The bioinformatic methodologies used in this investigation of pancreatic lipase-like genes and proteins may be also readily applied to other pancreatic proteins as well as other gene families encoding enzymes and proteins, including neutral lipases [35][36][37], acid lipases [66], carboxylesterases [67], enolases [68] and other gene families [69][70][71].…”
