Optic disc vasculitis

Abstract: Our study indicates that our cases represent a distinct clinical entity of ODV and not just a potpourri of unilateral optic disc edema of different etiologies. It is a self-limiting disease, usually with good prognosis, and benefits from treatment with systemic corticosteroids. The presence of retinal peripapillary phlebitis on fluorescein angiography suggests mild vasculitis of the optic nerve head as the primary pathological mechanism in this disorder.

“…The visual acuity was insignificantly affected and the disturbance of the visual field was only an enlargement of the blind spot in both cases. Ocular manifestations of our patients are compatible with optic disk vasculitis [5, 6]. Optic disk vasculitis is seen in young adults, usually complaining of unilateral vague blurring of vision, with almost a normal visual acuity.…”

“…301 ODV is another rare, primary optic neuropathy that appears clinically the same as other disk edemas. [302][303][304] The differential diagnosis of ODEMS and ODV with other associations will be discussed in the second part of this series. Sarcoidosis Sarcoidosis is an idiopathic granulomatous multisystem disease involving hyperimmune responses to unknown agents.…”

“…For example, Brazis and Lee [14] described a clinical entity, which they called "idiopathic optic disk edema with a macular star". This clinical entity in fact is "optic disc vasculitis" and we have described its clinical features in detail elsewhere based on a series of 34 eyes [15]. This clinical entity has also often been misdiagnosed as "neuroretinitis".…”
