Optical and Electrical Diagnostics of a High-Frequency Glow–Arc Discharge and Its Application to the Synthesis of Carbon Nanofibers

Abstract: In this paper, a detailed diagnostic of an ac glowto-arc discharge transition is presented. The behavior of the temporal evolution of voltage and current discharges is studied under an atmosphere of helium-methane. In order to determine the rotational temperature, an optical emissionspectroscopy analysis from glow-to-arc regime discharge is carried out, where the OH and C 2 bands, respectively, which are situated at 306.357 nm (A 2 Σ + , ν = 0 → X 2 Π, ν = 0) and 516.52 nm (d 3 Π g , ν = 0 → a 3 Π u , ν = 0), … Show more

“…As shown in Fig. 3 a , the discharge belongs to a typical glow discharge mode [20–22]. In this case, it can be noted that the current variation is slower and of longer duration (∼35 µs), and the current peak is about 21 mA.…”

“…Furthermore, the functionalities of CNFs are easily tailored through both chemical and physical alterations, which is extremely beneficial for doping functional nanoscale building blocks on the surface of CNFs, which yield a variety of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. CNFs have been manufactured using a wide range of techniques, including catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) [72], arc discharge [73], and laser ablation [74]. While arc discharge and laser ablation produce high-purity CNFs, they require a large-scale operation and substantial production costs.…”

“…The curves of the electric evolution from glowtoarc discharge as well as the traces of voltage versus current in both regimes were plotted using the real data obtained during the experiments carried out with the setup described in figure 1(a). These results are shown in figure 1(b) [45]. By multiplying the voltage by the current, the instant power applied to the plasma is determined and the rms power values are 51W for glow discharge and 96.7 W for the arc discharge.…”
