Optical Characteristics of Oil Palm Fresh Fruits Bunch (FFB) Under Three Spectrum Regions Influence for Harvest Decision

Abstract: In current practice, appearance was used to determine ripeness for oil palm fresh fruits bunch (FFB), that accompanied by detachment of fruit-lets from the bunch. The FFB from marihat clone harvested at five ripeness stages, under ripeness (F0), ripeness (F1, F2, F3), and over ripeness (F4). At every ripeness stages, differences of oil content and pigment accumulation were observed on the bunch. All samples recorded using a digital camera (10 MPixels) from 2, 7, 10, and 15 meter distance, simulating variation … Show more

“…We specified that complex background consists of stems, other leaves, soil, among others (as shown in Figure 1) as this is a challenging task, which is still under study [12], some approaches use images acquired under controlled conditions [13]. The images used for this study have either a uniform or a complex background that must be removed before any procedure for diseased tissue segmentation.…”

“…Product quality in palm oil depends to a considerable extent on avoidance of unripe fruits from the process and the challenge to control quality of FFB not derived from a mill's own plantation has been an issue in restricting relations with smallholders in Indonesia. Technical options for FFB quality control have been in development for some time (Dinah et al 2015).…”

“…The oil constitutes 10% of the total biomes produced in the plantation. For maximum palm oil extraction from the mesocarp, oil palm fresh fruit bunch (OPFFB) harvest is expected to be done at the right maturity stage (Dinah et al 2015;Cheng et al 2016a). The oil palm fruit is made up of 3 layers: the skin, which is called mesocarp, the palm oil containing outer pulp, which is called mesocarp, and the hard kernel enclosing shell (endocarp), which is also called the endosperm because it contains both the embryo's reserves for carbohydrates and oil.…”
