Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Findings in Optic Nerve Sheath Meningioma

Abstract: A 46-year-old female with a history of 5 months of progressive painless visual loss in the left eye was found to have an optic nerve sheath meningioma. Optical coherence tomography angiography showed a reduction in the superficial capillary plexus density consistent with her visual field defect and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thinning. Moreover, abnormalities in the choriocapillaris were found in the affected eye compared to the fellow eye. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed. Fu… Show more

“…OCTA detects particle (blood cell) movement that can be used to construct microvascular density maps [ 7 , 8 ]. A number of reports indicate that there is decreased optic disc perfusion and peripapillary capillary density on OCTA in patients with chronic glaucoma [ 9 , 10 , 11 ] and other optic neuropathies [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Chen et al [ 12 ] demonstrated RNFL thinning and decrease in the peripapillary capillary density on OCTA in various optic neuropathies.…”

“…Thus, the works of Miller [ 6 ] and Douglas et al [ 7 ] establish a relationship between ONSM and optic atrophy, but do not analyze the damage pattern more precisely. Interlandi et al reported [ 8 ] on a reduction of temporal RNFL thickness in a single-case report of ONSM.…”

“…We do not have a clear explanation for the excellent visual outcome obtained in the present case. Although there is no good standard for pretreatment evaluation for prognosis of visual function [17][18][19], good pretreatment vision is reported to be a reasonable prognostic factor for good visual outcomes [8,9]. Moreover, a good appearance of the retinal nerve fiber layer on OCT is usually considered a sign of good potential recovery [18].…”
