Optical coherence tomography in diagnosing inflammatory diseases of ENT

Abstract: Abstract:The object of the study was to demonstrate the abilities of optical coherence tomography (OCT) technique in diagnostics of inflammatory processes in ear, nose, and throat (ENT). When used in diagnostics of the nose and pharynx, OCT facilitates differential diagnostics of rhinitis enabling differentiation between the normal state, two stages of allergic rhinitis, vasomotor and atrophic rhinitis and diagnostics of pharyngitis. This paper also demonstrates the ability of OCT to monitor changes in pharynx… Show more

“…The revealed changes in the CP OCT characteristics are comparable with the results of our previous studies of urinary bladder 48,49 and urethra 50 and investigations of other groups. 51,52 Using OCT, Meller et al 51 demonstrated thinning of the epithelium in atrophic rhinitis. Pan et al 52 showed the partially and completely denudated urothelium following chemically induced in-°a mmation.…”

“…24 In rhinology, OCT has been used to examine changes to the nasal septum mucosa following septoplasty, different types of rhinitis, and decongestant use. [25][26][27] OCT Imaging of the TM The recent focus of clinical OCT imaging of the TM (see Table 1 for the last 5 years; for all studies used for this review, see Supplemental Table S1 in the online version of the article) has been on improving the diagnosis of OM, where handheld OCT probes (Figure 4a) have demonstrated the ability to detect the presence of biofilm behind the TM, which is suggestive of chronic OM. [28][29][30] Using OCT-detected biofilm to diagnose chronic OM, 1 study with 20 patients reported higher diagnostic sensitivity (83% vs 74%) and specificity (98% vs 60%) over standard otoscopy.…”

“…Для объективизации оценки диагностических изображений часто применяются методы численного анализа изображений . Одним из основных подходов является анализ текстуры ОКТ-изображений, основанный на построении гистограммы всего изображения или его части [20,22] . Гистограмма представляет собой распределение пикселей изображения по величине ОКТ-сигнала (яркости пиксела) .…”
