Abstract:We demonstrate control over the motional degrees of freedom of a cryogenic hydrogen atomic beam using an accelerating optical lattice. For our method, we load metastable atoms from a cryogenic beam into a moving optical lattice, decelerate the lattice, and observe a commensurate deceleration of the atoms. For this demonstration, hydrogen atoms are decelerated by about 20 m/s in a 40 ns slowing cycle, with a peak acceleration of 4*10^8 m/s^2. Since the optical lattice is governed by standard optoelectronics, … Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
