Optical fiber elements for addressing individual cores in multicore optical fiber sensors

Abstract: Multicore optical fibers gained a lot of interest in the different fields of fiber sensing. This is mainly due to the possibility of carrying out simultaneous measurements on each core and simplicity of such fiber fabrication. A disadvantage of multicore fibers is related to the complex introducing and detecting light from the individual cores. In this paper we discuss two classes of multicore fiber sensors and optical fiber elements for addressing individual cores in this kind of fibers.

“…MCFs can be used directly with most devices, but a complex and precise optical mapping between cores and individual modes or cores are required. This calls for development of special fan-out components to allow "plug and play" use of MCFs for sensing applications [111]. Multiple techniques are recently developed for low-loss single mode and multimode fibres interference with variety of fibre arrangements.…”

“…This technique was originally developed for connections of high power fibre laser modules [114]. Fan-outs used in FOSSs can be simply customised using TFBs for 4-core or 7-core MCFs [111]. The use of direct focused femtosecond lasers for inscription of integratedoptic waveguide chips, has also shown promising results to develop fast and section SSMFs to MCF fan-outs [112].…”

“…This subsection mainly describes the multi-core elements for addressing individual cores in optical sensors. For specialty sensing MCFs with enhanced spatial-channel densities, by using adhesive and heating up the fiber bundle in the capillary, a more compact configuration with fiber cores fixed in the capillary can be achieved compared to just a bundle of SMFs [ 80 ]. When the light is introduced into the cores of MCFs by separate light sources, the alignment of tapered MCF and SMF can be used to control the division of light power among the non-uniformly distributed fiber cores in the cross-section of MCF [ 81 ].…”
