Optical Fibre Sensors: a Current Perspective

Abstract: This paper presents a very brief overview of the principles which have evolved and the achievements which have accrued over almost half a century of fibre optic sensors. We cite a few examples of success stories along the way, but the very diverse nature of optical fibre sensor technologies of necessity infers that these few examples will be but representative and many are omitted. We also speculate on the future evolution of fibre sensors, both in terms of applications potential and the incorporation of resea… Show more

“…Therefore, having a device to detect the presence of hazardous gaseous is a need in today's community. Fiber optics sensor technology has been utilized in various applications for almost a century with a variety of specifications and properties proposed by researchers to solve complex measuring problems and monitor parameters such as strain, temperature, pressure, and others [6][7][8]. The optical fiber sensor consists of a core and cladding with different refractive indices, where the light will be either transmitted to one end of the fiber or reflected back.…”

“…Optical fiber sensing has been continuously evolving since its first observations in 1970 due to various advantages over conventional electronic sensing, such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, galvanic isolation, harsh environment suitability, no need for electrical power at the measuring point, compactness and multiplexing capability [ 1 , 2 ]. Notably, optical fiber sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have gained special attention among the scientific and industrial communities.…”

“…To resume, the optical fiber sensing technology is today a successful and mature technology after a half-century of development [1][2][3][4][5], with a yearto-year increasing market participation. It is expected that in the near future arose new emerging applications offering new opportunities for research and exploitation.…”
