Optical intensity-driven reversible photonic bandgaps in self-organized helical superstructures with handedness inversion

Abstract: Optical intensity-driven self-organized helical superstructures were found to exhibit reversibly photodynamical photonic bandgaps in wavelength shifting, bandwidth broadening and reflectance enhancing in single-layer system.

“…Feringa and co-workers pioneered the sterically overcrowded alkenes with intrinsic helical conformations which could induce the handedness inversion of cholesteric LCs as chiral photoswitches. [239][240][241][242][243][244][245] For example, the compound (P)-a exhibits a right-handed helix with the initial HTP of +5.9 µm −1 in nematic host M15 (Figure 9a, top). [246] UV Irradiation leads to the photoisomerization into photostationary left-handed (M)-a with an overall HTP of −9.6 µm −1 .…”

“…Many strategies have been developed for the rational molecular design of single chiral molecular photoswitches that could confer handedness inversion capability to cholesteric LCs, but the event of light‐driven handedness inversion using such methodology is often encountered by chance. Feringa and co‐workers pioneered the sterically overcrowded alkenes with intrinsic helical conformations which could induce the handedness inversion of cholesteric LCs as chiral photoswitches . For example, the compound ( P )‐ a exhibits a right‐handed helix with the initial HTP of +5.9 µm −1 in nematic host M15 ( Figure a, top) .…”

“…Among various types of ordered nanoarchitectures, photonic liquid crystals (PLCs) of 2D nanomaterials have attracted recent attention owing to the ability of dynamically interacting with the light of interest to achieve brilliant reflection colors (11). Generally, the color of PLCs originates from the periodic structures with long-range positional ordering, such as lamellar or helical arrangement (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). In particular, lamellar structure is one of the most studied designs for fabricating photonic materials of 2D building blocks due to the structural similarity to natural nacre and pearls (18).…”

“… 8 The photonic properties of Ch–LCs stem from their intrinsic helical structure, with a selective reflection of light that is related to the length of the helical pitch. 20 , 21 When in proper planar alignment, Ch–LCs are highly transparent to light outside the reflection band. Temperature-responsive color change in Ch–LCs is caused by a change in the pitch length.…”
