Optical pathlength measurements on adult head, calf and forearm and the head of the newborn infant using phase resolved optical spectroscopy

Abstract: We have used an intensity modulated optical spectrometer, which measures the phase shift across tissue experienced by intensity modulated near-infrared light, to determine the absolute optical pathlength through tissue. The instrument is portable and takes only 5 s to record pathlength at four wavelengths (690 nm, 744 nm, 807 nm and 832 nm). The absolute pathlength divided by the known spacing between the light source and detector on the skin is the differential pathlength factor (DPF) which previous studies h… Show more

“…Duncan et al, 1995;Matcher et al, 1995a). The DPF was found to be age, gender and wavelength dependent and varies between subjects (Duncan et al, 1996;Essenpreis et al, 1993) and different tissues (Duncan et al, 1995). For example the average DPF for the adult head for 100 subjects given by Duncan et al is 6.53 ± 0.99, i.e.…”

“…For the present study, the DPF was obtained by applying a linear regression to the values for a male adult forehead as published by Duncan et al (1995 A limitation of the MBLL method (as described in section 2.1.1) is that only concentration changes can be determined. Benni et al (2005) developed a method to obtain absolute concentration values using CW NIRS, based on the groundwork of Tamura (1988), (1989) and Hoshi et al (1997).…”

“…The NIRO-300 allows parallel measurement of two channels at a sampling frequency of 6 Hz. The emitterdetector spacing was 4 cm, and a differential pathlength factor of 6.26 was used (Duncan et al, 1995). Two emitter -detector pairs were placed crosswise; one was oriented vertically, the other horizontally (Fig.…”
