Optical pattern generator for efficient bio-data encoding in a photonic sequence comparison architecture

Abstract: In this study, optical technology is considered as SA issues' solution with the potential ability to increase the speed, overcome memory-limitation, reduce power consumption, and increase output accuracy. So we examine the effect of bio-data encoding and the creation of input images on the pattern-recognition error-rate at the output of optical Vander-lugt correlator. Moreover, we present a genetic algorithm-based coding approach, named as GAC, to minimize output noises of cross-correlating data. As a case stu… Show more

“…In particular, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) increase performance of computer vision applications, namely image classification [5] and pattern recognition [6]. Notwithstanding the fact that CNNs dramatically affect the performance of solving NP-complete problems, they afflict by massive computations due to quite a few parameters and operations in neural networks [7]- [9] which have huge datasets as biomedical applications [10].…”

“…Over 50 years have passed and the Vander Lugt correlator remains an effective tool for pattern recognition problems such alignment of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences [23] or counting k-mers substrings in a DNA string [24]. Pattern recognition can also be achieved via optical artificial neural networks (ANNs) [25,26].…”

“…It is worth noted that optical implementation of CNN can be used in real-life applications, such as processing of large biological data sequences. As explained in [30], while designing sequence alignment tool for biological sequences (i.e., DNAs, RNAs, or proteins) is a debatable issue, adopting optical correlators can speed up the computation time by 81% against the electrical counterparts.…”
