Ahstract-A study of the adsorption kinetics ofl-octanethiol and 1,8-octanedithiol has been carried out on gold electrode by cyclic voltammetry with different concentrations. Analysis of the kinetic data show that the adsorption kinetics of l-octanethiol and 1,8-octanedithiol can be satisfactorily described by Diffusion controlled Langmuir(DCL) model, irrespective of concentration. The rate constants of l-octanethiol and 1,8-octanedithiol are almost invariable at different concertrations, however, the fluctuant range of 1,8-octanedithiol is larger than that of octanethiol. The rate constants of other alkanethiol(n=12,14,16,18) are measured and tunneling parameter (P) is determined from these data

Effect of Temperature and Oxygen on Luminescence Spectra and Polarization of Divinylbenzoxazolylbiphenyl Thin Films

H-type molecular aggregation as assembly with chromophore dipoles arranged parallel to each other has been observed in absorption and luminescence spectra of divinylbenzoxazolylbiphenyl thin films deposited on quartz glass substrate by thermovacuum method. The reversible changes of fluorescence anisotropy have been observed under film heating below the glass transition temperature correlating with lifetime changes. The addition of oxygen was found to cause an essential luminescence quenching. The hexyloxy group in the side chain of dibenzoxazolylbiphenyl molecule decreases H-type molecular aggregation and energy migration, and increases luminescence quenching induced by adsorbed oxygen owing to the formation of more porous film morphology.

The kinetics of formation of self-assembled monolayers on gold generated by the adsorption of 1-octanethiol and 1,8-octanedithiol were explored by electrochemistry measurement. The time dependence of capacitance and surface coverage supported that the adsorption of thiols typically processed with a two-step adsorption consisted of a fast initial adsorption and a slowly following reorganization. From the function of surface coverage versus time, one could get rate constants of adsorption of thiols, and the adsorption process was demonstrated to follow a diffusion-controlled Langmuir model. A comparison of the adsorption rates for different concentration between 1-octanethiol and 1,8-octanedithiol revealed that their adsorption processes were almost identical and independent on the concentration, inferring that only one sulfur atom contributed to the self-assembly of dithiol molecule.
