“…1, absorption bands at 13 K from the lowest Yb 3+ ion 2 F 7/2 (0) ground-state level to the lowest 2 F 5/2 (0) excited state level are shown for the YSO:5%Yb single crystal and YSO:6%Yb thin film. The two main absorption bands 10,189 and 10,215 cm À1 correspond to the two nonequivalent Yb 3+ ions sites I and II while the weaker sidebands $10,184, 10,194, 10,205, 10,207, 10,220 and 10,223 cm À1 are associated with magnetically coupled Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ pairs [2,4]. The relative absorption band intensities, between the main absorption bands and the satellites, indicate that for the same doping concentrations the thin film Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ ion pairs are fewer than in the single crystal while Yb 3+ ions site II occupation is favored.…”

“…Yb-doped Y 2 SiO 5 (YSO:Yb) thin films and single crystals have been recently studied by Raman spectroscopy and infrared transmission [2][3][4]. In particular, the crystal-field (CF) levels of the two Yb 3+ ions occupied sites in Y 2 SiO 5 (YSO) have been detected with their vibronic side bands, and Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ magnetically coupled pairs have been observed.…”

“…In addition, rare‐earth elements (Ce 3+ , Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ , etc.) activated Y 2 SiO 5 and Y 2 Si 2 O 7 are also reported as candidates to replace Nd 3+ :YAG (Y 3 Al 5 O 12 ) solid lasers …”

“…In recent years, Y 2 SiO 5 has attracted considerable attention owing to its important technological applications, as structural/functional ceramics, including promising candidate of solid state lasers, damage tolerant ceramics, and thermal/environmental barrier coating (TBC/EBC) materials . Because of various difficulties in synthesizing dense, phase‐pure and bulk Y 2 SiO 5 , the significance of this compound as a structural‐functional ceramic was ignored for many years.…”
