“…1, absorption bands at 13 K from the lowest Yb 3+ ion 2 F 7/2 (0) ground-state level to the lowest 2 F 5/2 (0) excited state level are shown for the YSO:5%Yb single crystal and YSO:6%Yb thin film. The two main absorption bands 10,189 and 10,215 cm À1 correspond to the two nonequivalent Yb 3+ ions sites I and II while the weaker sidebands $10,184, 10,194, 10,205, 10,207, 10,220 and 10,223 cm À1 are associated with magnetically coupled Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ pairs [2,4]. The relative absorption band intensities, between the main absorption bands and the satellites, indicate that for the same doping concentrations the thin film Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ ion pairs are fewer than in the single crystal while Yb 3+ ions site II occupation is favored.…”
