Optical Reflectance Studies of Stage 1-4 Graphite-Sbcl5 Intercalation Compounds in the Range 0.2-10 eV

Abstract: We report optical reflectance measurements on stage 1-4 graphite-SbCZ 5 intercalation compounds in the enermv ranae 0.2 to 10 eV.The data are analyzed using a Kramers-Kroniq relation to determine the parameters describing the intraband and interband contributions to the dielectric functions 6 1 (w) and 62(M).Structure in these functions are compared with recent band calculations by Blinowski et al.

“…The charge transfer per SbCl 5 molecule is 0.31 (0.0055 hole per carbon atom based on the composition of C 4xl 4SbCl 5 ), well within the range of reported values. 9,18 Note that the derived chemical composition is in reasonable agreement with Mossbauer studies of the stage-2 compound which give SbCl 4 -:SbCl 3 and SbCl 6~: SbCl 3 ratios of 0.25 and 1.9, respectively, but indicate a higher degree of disproportionation.…”
