Optical remote inspection of live contact wire cross-sections in a train's electro-supply network

Abstract: An optical structured light method and an opto-electronic system for automatic noncontact distant measurements of wear and defect detection for a contact wire electro-supply network are presented. The industrial prototype of the system can extract the main technological wire parameters: the remaining height with the rms error down to 0.15 mm and the wire cross-section area with a rms error of 1.5 mm2. This information is sufficient for confident decision making as to safe operation of the contact wire electro-… Show more

“…2. The changes implemented in the optical layout of the unit in compare with [8], has resulted in decrease of the measurement uncertainty when the wire is high-worn. The pulse mode of the laser provides high brightness of the radiation scattered on the surface of the contact wire that has significantly increased the S/N ratio of the image obtained in comparison to the ones, registered by the first model.…”

“…A part of the above-mentioned problems can be solved using the structural light method [7,8]. As for the problems of transferring and processing of large video information flows as well as the measurement of wire residual height with sufficient accuracy under the high wear values, they has not been solved for the present time.…”

“…Wire image profiles Instead of contact manual method we have developed the structured light method for wire geometry measurement and surface defects inspection [6]. A special illuminator forms one or several transversal plane-shaped beams, which are incident on the wire surface at some angle to its axis (Fig.…”
