Optical sensing system based on wireless paired emitter detector diode device and ionogels for lab-on-a-disc water quality analysis

Abstract: This work describes the first use of a wireless paired emitter detector diode device (PEDD) as an optical sensor for water quality monitoring in a lab-on-a-disc device. The microfluidic platform, based on an ionogel sensing area combined with a lowcost optical sensor is applied for pH (quantitative) and qualitative turbidity monitoring of water samples at the point-of-need. The autonomous capabilities of the PEDD system, combined with the portability and wireless communication of the full device, provide the fl… Show more

“…4). 96 Such a device consists of two light emitting diodes, one serving as the light source and the other, in reverse bias mode, as the light detector. 96 Note that both types of the ionogels were prepared by cross-linking of the corresponding monomers in [P6, 6,6,14]DCA and [P4,4,4,4]DCA (DCA -diacetylamide).…”

“…95 The paired emitter detector diode platform for lab-on-disc water quality analysis has a great potential for samples with a relatively high level of solid particles. 96 Plastic reusable pH indicator strips prepared using PILs were found to be stable in both aqueous and organic solutions. 57 The attractive features of the developed pH indicator strips are their reusability, enhanced pH-responsive color changes, and pH-response reversibility in aqueous and organic solutions (Fig.…”

“…Unlike the first generation system, 29 CMAS employs not only colorimetric chemical detection, but also centrifugal disc spinning, enabling on site sample manipulation analysis. CMAS has a modular design with easily interchangeable optical detection units, which allow any colorimetric reagent based assay to be implemented.…”

“…Over the last two decades, various microfluidic "lab-on-a-disc" (LoaD) platforms have proven to facilitate full integration and automation of laboratory unit operations such as blood separation, metering, aliquoting, mixing, reagent storage and sequential reagent delivery Duford et al 2013;Honda et al 2005;Kim et al 2013;Robert et al 2013;Steigert et al 2007;van Oordt et al 2013) for applications in bioprocess, (Nwankire et al 2013) biomedical, (Godino et al 2013;Park et al 2012) food allergen (Tortajada-Genaro et al 2011), pathogen detection (Golden et al 2013) and environmental monitoring. (Czugala et al 2012;Hwang et al 2013) Nevertheless, few examples of portable sample-to-answer systems with optical read-out have been demonstrated. (Abaxis 2012;Lee et al 2009) A standard computer DVD drive has been proposed for a range of applications including cell counting, food allergen tests and blood analysis.…”
