Optical source apportionment and radiative effect of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols in a tropical marine monsoon climate zone: the importance of ship emissions

Abstract: Abstract. Source-specific optical properties of light-absorbing carbonaceous (LAC) aerosols in the atmosphere are poorly understood because they are generated by various sources. In this study, a receptor model combining multi-wavelength absorption and chemical species was used to explore the source-specific optical properties of LAC aerosols in a tropical marine monsoon climate zone. The results showed that biomass burning and ship emissions were the dominant contributors to average aerosol light absorption. … Show more

“…The NCP region is one of the economic zones in China, while most affected by air pollution ( Li et al, 2020 ; Sun et al, 2021b ). Carbonaceous aerosol is one of the main components of atmospheric particulate matter, which is of great significance due to its role in climate change, earth's radiation balance, visibility, and human health ( Bikkina et al, 2017 ; Li et al, 2009 ; Wang et al, 2020b ; Wang et al, 2020e ). Organic carbon (OC) is the main component (~90%) ( Ram et al, 2008 ) of carbonaceous aerosols, while organic aerosol (OA) is an important contributor (20–90 wt%) to PM 2.5 ( Cao et al, 2012 ; Sosa et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Ambient concentrations of V and Ni together with the ratios between them related to ship emissions in coastal regions have been reported in a number of studies, and most of the earlier ones relied on manual filter samples for periodic observation in which the intervals were at least 12–24 h. Several online measurement technologies such as particle-induced Streaker sampling with particle-induced X-ray emission spectrometry (PIXE) analysis and rotating drum impactor sampling with synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) have been developed and applied to observe metal compositions in particles including V and Ni. Recently, a highly time-resolved Xact method based on nondestructive energy dispersive XRF (ED-XRF) analysis has been developed and applied in the measurements in America, Europe, and Asia including coastal regions of China. It is feasible to capture the signal of ship emissions using the Xact method.…”

“…S1). The contribution of secondary BrC in cloud INT and cloud-free particles are in the low range of reported values (as summarized in Table S2) (Gao et al, 2022;Kaskaoutis et al, 2021;Lin et al, 2021;Wang et al, 2019aWang et al, , 2019bWang et al, , 2020bWang et al, , 2021Zhang et al, 2020Zhang et al, , 2021Zhu et al, 2021). Differently, the contribution of secondary formed BrC to the total BrC light-absorption is 67-85% in the cloud RES particles, surprisingly higher than those in the cloud-free and cloud INT particles.…”
