Optical Spectropolarimetry of SN 2002[CLC]ap[/CLC]: A High-Velocity Asymmetric Explosion

Abstract: We present spectropolarimetry of the Type Ic supernova SN 2002ap and give a preliminary analysis: the data were taken at two epochs, close to and one month later than the visual maximum (2002 February 8). In addition we present June 9 spectropolarimetry without analysis. The data show the development of linear polarization. Distinct polarization profiles were seen only in the O I λ7773 multiplet/Ca II IR triplet absorption trough at maximum light and in the O I λ7773 multiplet and Ca II IR triplet absorption … Show more

“…The low levels of continuum polarisation observed here are consistent with those found in other stripped CCSNe, such as SNe 2008D, 2007gr, 2005bf, and 2002ap (Maund et al 2009Tanaka et al 2008;Maund et al 2007b;Kawabata et al 2002). These levels of polarisation limit the degree of global asymmetries to ∼ <10% (Höflich 1991).…”

“…Considering the results of Kawabata et al (2002) along with their own, Leonard et al (2002) concluded an MW-dominated ISP value of = -Q 0.17 Wang et al (2003) arrived at a similar value of = -Q 0.26…”

“…Prior to SN 2013ej, Messier 74 was host to SN 2002ap, for which spectropolarimetry was obtained by Leonard et al (2002), Kawabata et al (2002), and Wang et al (2003). Considering the results of Kawabata et al (2002) along with their own, Leonard et al (2002) concluded an MW-dominated ISP value of = -Q 0.17 Wang et al (2003) arrived at a similar value of = -Q 0.26…”

“…However, as we report in this Letter, some normal Ic SNe like Based on observations made with the Nordic Optical Telescope, operated on the island of La Palma, in the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, and on observations done at the Centro Astronómico Hispano Alemán (CAHA) at Calar alto, operated jointly by the Max-Planck Institut für Astronomie and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (CSIC). SN 2002ap (Mazzali et al 2002) share some similarities with SN 2006aj; polarization levels above ∼1% and, more interestingly, long-term rotations in the polarization angle (Kawabata et al 2002).…”
