Optical Transmitters without Driver Amplifiers—Optimal Operation Conditions

Abstract: An important challenge in optical communications is the generation of highest-quality waveforms with a Mach–Zehnder modulator with a limited electrical swing (Vpp). For this, we discuss, under limited Vpp, the influence of the waveform design on the root-mean-square amplitude, and thus, the optical signal quality. We discuss the influence of the pulse shape, clipping, and digital pre-distortion on the signal quality after the electrical-to-optical conversion. Our simulations and experiments, e.g., suggest that… Show more

“…The optical receiver detected the in-phase and quadrature part of the waveform and sampled the signal with 160 GSa s −1 . For the 100 GBd measurements, we applied a static digital post-distortion filter at the beginning of the DSP 73 . The following steps were timing synchronization, carrier recovery and linear and non-linear equalization.…”

“…• Optical Transmitters without Driver Amplifiers-Optimal Operation Conditions [7] The authors discuss the influence of waveform design on the root-mean-square amplitude and the optical signal quality generated by a Mach-Zehnder modulator with a limited electrical swing (Vpp). Specifically, the influence of the pulse shape, clipping, and digital pre-distortion on the signal quality after the electrical-to-optical conversion are investigated.…”
