Optically controlled reconfigurable band‐notched UWB antenna for cognitive radio systems

Abstract: A compact optically controlled ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with reconfigurable band-notched characteristics is investigated for cognitive radio (CR) applications. The rejection mechanism is realised by etching one symmetric folded slot on the U-shaped radiation patch and the essence of the reconfigurable function is achieved by laser controlling photoconductive switches to change the effective length of the folded slot. A prototype with an overall size of 25 × 25 × 0.8 mm 3 is designed and constructed. On the… Show more

“…Furthermore, Table lists the performance of the proposed and the reported reconfigurable UWB antennas with band‐notched function. Compared with the single‐band notched antennas, dual‐band notched antennas, and single‐/dual‐band notched antennas, the antenna in this work has the triple‐band notched characteristic. Also, the antenna size in this work is smaller except the antennas in References .…”

“…In Reference , the tunable rejection band is realized through controlling the bias voltages of the varactor inserted in the rectangular strips and the U‐shaped parasitic element. Furthermore, UWB antennas with reconfigurable band‐notched performance are illustrated by using optically controlled microwave switch integrated in the slots …”

“…Printed antennas have been lately become very popular due to their advantages such as low profile, light weight and versatile, and thus suitable for reconfigurability. Several reconfigurable band‐notched UWB printed designs have been proposed in the literature . An elaborate review and comparison is presented in Section 5, hereby they are concisely addressed.…”

“…Owing to the mechanical devices, the dimension and cost will be increased. Furthermore, adopting electrical, optical [13,14], and mechanical methods as well as active elements by RF micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). However, there are some related problems like the degradation of the switches on the antenna performance and the PIN diodes resistances, which require a large DC power.…”
