Optimal control of discrete time population processes

Abstract: This paper deals with two classes of large-scale Markov decision models which can be used, respectively, for hospital admission scheduling and multicomponent system maintenance. These models are called population processes as they describe a set of individuals represented by a set of independent replicas of the same underlying stochastic core process. Two examples are completely worked out, showing the potential utilization of this modelling approach.
