Optimal Design of a Wide Area Measurement System Using Hybrid Wireless Sensors and Phasor Measurement Units

Abstract: Real-time monitoring of the power system by phasor measurement units (PMUs) leads to the development of such devices in a wide area measurement system (WAMS). However, the power system observability cannot be obtained by employing only PMUs. The communication infrastructure (CI) is a significant part of the WAMS that has to be optimally designed and implemented to collect data from PMUs and deliver them to control centers. In this paper, a novel hybrid wireless sensor network is proposed for the connection of … Show more

“…The development of a hybrid communication network that serves as a communication infrastructure is key to the development of these devices, making it a widely researched area. Some of the systems developed show several advantages over conventional fiber optic communication systems, in terms of placement and installation costs, with simple infrastructures such as the system exposed in [113]. Another service that is established intelligently is tourism, through the concept of RoomFort, an application for managing the comfort or convenience of hotel guests [114].…”

“…These measurements are critical because if the grid supply/demand balance is not perfectly matched, frequency imbalances and voltage amplitude fluctuations can cause stress on the grid, which is a potential cause of power outages [32]. It is worth emphasizing that optimal PMU placement in WAMS is one of the most investigated issues by researchers and engineers in order to improve the observability and security of the power system [33,34].…”
