Optimal Design of Laminated Composite Plates for Maximum Buckling Load Using Genetic Algorithm

Abstract: An optimization procedure using a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to determine the optimal stacking sequence of laminated composite plates for the maximum buckling load under several different loadings, such as uniaxial compression, shear, biaxial compression, and the combination of shear and biaxial loadings. A series of optimal design is conducted for composite laminates having different aspect ratios, load conditions, and number of plies. Critical buckling load is taken as fitness function and fibre orie… Show more

“…35 Any information on GA is not given here due to the fact that GA has been frequently used in laminate optimization problems. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] However, relatively new algorithm trust region reflective algorithm (TRRA) will be briefly introduced.…”

“…3,4 Genetic Algorithm (GA) is the most commonly used stochastic optimization method in design and optimization of composite laminates. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] GAs are also well suited for stacking sequence optimization in which they can produce alternative optima in repeated runs due to their random nature. 14 Buckling should be considered as a critical failure mode for thin and large composite plates subjected to compressive in-plane loads.…”

“…23 Figure 10 illustrates a new FEA method uniting commercial software MOLDFLOW, DIGIMAT and ABAQUS to simulate the performance of LGFT wheel, capturing the material anisotropy. Different from the easily known fiber directions of composite laminates, 24 the fiber distribution and direction in LGFT wheel are quite complicated. The mold simulation is conducted to obtain the distributions and directions at various positions by using MOLDFLOW.…”

“…Unlike the other discrete optimization algorithms like branch and bound methods, sequential linearization methods, methods based on penalty functions, Lagrangian relaxation methods, and so on, which operate with a single point in each iteration, the GAs use multiple points (referred to as population). Several GA-based laminate composite layup optimization algorithms are reported in the literature 410 clearly reflecting their popularity. However, most of these algorithms attempt to optimize a single objective with possibly one or more constraints.…”
