Optimal directional digital overcurrent relays coordination and arc-flash hazard assessments in meshed networks

Abstract: Summary The article addresses the arc‐flash hazard assessments combining the optimal coordination of digital overcurrent relays. A novel objective function is adopted to concurrently reduce the arc‐flash hazards while adapting the optimal settings of directional overcurrent relays subjects to set of coordination constraints. The flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is applied to attain the target. The proposed FPA‐based technique is employed to define three main parameters for the relay settings. The performance… Show more

“…Promising alternative solutions to tackle the difficulties and drawbacks of the conventional methods are the applications of heuristic‐based optimization procedures, with the understanding that the relay coordination plans are formulated as an optimization problem with various complexity and nonlinearity, which can be solved using the application of heuristic‐based algorithms. Among these heuristic‐based computing algorithms are genetic algorithm (GA), ant colony algorithm, various variants of differential evolution (DE) algorithm, firefly algorithm, teaching learning optimization algorithm, artificial bees colony, flower pollination algorithm (FPA), symbiotic organism search optimization, and many more, which have been attempted to solve the relay coordination problems under various network topologies. In the study of Alam et al, 5 meta‐heuristic optimization methods are considered to solve the optimal relay coordination with comprehensive comparisons of their performances.…”

“…The detailed specifications of the system are available in Chabanloo et al 29 Both ends of feeders are equipped with OCRs, and directional relays as the topology can be changed, and consequently, the direction of power flows will change. OCRs 2,5,10,12,14,17,20,23,25,and 27 are blocked by the directional relays, and they are not considered in protection coordination. Table 13 provides the maximum load and fault currents.…”

“…In Atteya et al, 23 the application of the modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm in an adaptive protection scheme, considering the integration of DGs, is proposed. In El-Fergany, 27 a new objective function is introduced to decrease the arc-flash hazards as well as to retain the optimal coordination of directional OCRs. This method is applicable only to single-stage TCCs, and transient overcurrents are not considered.…”
