A Conceptual Development Framework for Prefabricated Construction Supply Chain Management: An Integrated Overview

Prefabricated construction (PC), with the characteristics of green, environmentally friendly, energy saving and high production efficiency, is attracting more and more attention from all over the world. Supply chain management is closely related to the application efficiency of PC, but only in the last three years has this interdisciplinary research received due attention. The prefabricated construction supply chain management (PCSCM) have not received enough attention. Especially recently, the related literature shows explosive growth. This paper adopted the method of systematic literature review through the tool of bibliometric statistics. And we reviewed 152 articles from 2001 to 2018, with the goal of understanding the current situation, trends, and gaps in PCSCM research, and a framework is proposed to promote its development. First, the study discussed the four themes of clustering, concentrating mainly on strategic research and project evaluation, PC supply chain process design and optimization, supply chain integration and management, and the application of advanced technology. Then, the research gaps and conceptual development framework to promote PCSCM were reported. Only through the coordinated development of technology, market circumstances, and decision-making level of participants, can the PCSC form an integrated whole, so as to optimize the efficiency and sustainability of prefabricated construction industry and improve its level.

Optimal transportation planning for prefabricated products in construction

Prefabrication‐based construction has several advantages, such as short building time and superior quality. The transportation of prefabricated products from factories to construction sites has two key issues to consider. One is how to efficiently utilize the capacity of trucks in order to use as few trucks as possible, and the other is how to postpone the transportation of prefabricated products so as to pay for them as late as possible. This study proposes a mathematical programming model to optimize the transportation planning of prefabricated products to minimize the sum of trucking transportation costs and inventory holding costs. Extensive numerical experiments show that the optimal transport plan generated by the model outperforms the plan obtained by a greedy approach by 10% of cost savings, implying the effectiveness of the model for the construction industry.

This research explores the function of Customer Service (CS) in Third-Party Logistics (3PL) companies and their efficiency levels. Many 3PL companies rely on the performance of its CS department as the windows of contact between external customers and internal customers. Despite the critical function of CS in 3PL companies, less attention is given on the development and progress of the CS area. Poor CS performance leads to miscommunication among internal departments, suppliers and worst its customers. This situation, if prolonged, will give a high toll in operations cost and the company’s reputation in the industry. While companies with excellent CS team retain, more extended customers’ relationship and support derived from reliable services and trust experienced by customers with less additional or unexpected operations cost occurrence. The first objective of this study is to identify the factors influencing the CS efficiency and the second objective determined the level of efficiency of CS in 3PL companies. A thorough archival data were compiled and observed from previous studies conducted in this field. Interviews were conducted with selective respondents from 3PL companies located in Johor Bahru to measure CS efficiency. The findings of this research revealed each companies’ CS team performance and recommended areas for future improvements.
