Optimal Model for the Controller Placement Problem in Software Defined Networks

Abstract: In this letter, we propose a mathematical model for the controller placement problem in Software Defined Networks (SDN). More precisely, given a set of switches that must be managed by the controller(s), the model simultaneously determines the optimal number, location, and type of controller(s) as well as the interconnections between all the network elements. The goal of the model is to minimize the cost of the network while considering different constraints. The simulation results show that the model can be u… Show more

“…The network cost is composed of the deployment cost and energy consumption. In order to formulate the deployment cost, authors of [22] develop an optimal model and the overall energy consumption is reduced according to their simulation. The main challenge of this model is its big complexity, e.g., some of the calculations cannot be achieved within 30 hours.…”

“…LiDy+ does not only provide the minimum number of controllers and maximum controller utilization but also takes less energy consumption and maintenance costs as compared to LiDy. Both schemes provide better results as compared to previous studies . In previous research work, controllers were deployed only to switch locations, but here, the authors' aim is to deploy the controller in a location other than of the switch locations so that the propagation latency gets reduced.…”
