Abstract:This paper presents a new approach for designing orbits for infrared (IR) space-borne observatories using multiple gravity assists. A large displacement normal to the ecliptic plane mitigates the noise generated by the local zodiacal dust, thereby reducing the size, weight, and complexity of the telescope. Although previous works focused on long-term missions, allowing very long transfer times to out-of-ecliptic orbits, this paper considers short-duration missions, for which the transfer times are tightly cons… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
