Optimal Pilot Design for Pilot Contamination Elimination/Reduction in Large-Scale Multiple-Antenna Aided OFDM Systems

Abstract: Abstract-This paper considers the problem of pilot contamination (PC) in large-scale multi-cell multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) aided orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. We propose an efficient scheme relying on an optimal pilot design conceived for time-domain channel estimation, which can either completely eliminate PC or significantly reduce it, depending on the channel's coherence time. This is achieved by designing an optimal pilot set to allowing us to beneficially group the users in… Show more

“…However, in the realistic multi-cell scenario, owing to the inevitable reuse of the same pilot sequences among neighboring cells, pilot contamination (PC) may occur, which may result in the BS being unable to reliably estimate the true channels between its serving users and itself, even when an infinite number of antennas are deployed. PC constitutes a serious impairment that limits the system's achievable performance, and hence considerable research efforts have been focused on mitigating or eliminating PC [8]- [17]. Among various PC mitigating/eliminating schemes [8]- [17], the scheme of [17] has been shown to be most effective and efficient.…”

“…PC constitutes a serious impairment that limits the system's achievable performance, and hence considerable research efforts have been focused on mitigating or eliminating PC [8]- [17]. Among various PC mitigating/eliminating schemes [8]- [17], the scheme of [17] has been shown to be most effective and efficient. This is because the PC elimination schemes [8]- [16] require an excessively long channel coherence time to work, and they can no longer be used if the channel coherent time is insufficiently large 1 .…”
