Optimal Plot Dimensions for Performance Testing of Hybrid Potato in the Field

Abstract: Field trials to evaluate the performance of new varieties are an essential component of potato breeding. Besides the genetic differences, environmental factors can lead to variation in a trial. In variety trials, the observed differences amongst varieties should reflect genetic differences, without a large impact of the random or systematic variation in the field. One way to reduce within-field variation is to adjust the plot size and its shape in a trial. Two years of field trials in which individual plants i… Show more

“…In 2017, a diversity panel of 147 tetraploid potato cultivars, and a set of 222 diploid potato hybrids derived from 118 diploid parents, were tested in three locations (the Netherlands, Poland and Spain). Plots consisted of 8 plants (2 ridges of 4 plants), which may seem low, but even at this level we can sufficiently detect differences between genotypes for tuber related traits (Stockem et al, 2022). These plots were separated by border plants.…”

“…In its consecutive season a planted seedling tuber could either bear seed or ware tubers. Seed tubers -used as starting material of a new potato crop- could, in this paper, originate from either seedlings, seedling tubers or a different type of tuber starting materials [ 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ]. Ware potatoes, materials which are meant for consumption or any type of industrial use, could origin from any type of potato starting material.…”

“…Using large plots cost more resources that also could be used to evaluate more genotypes, and plots should be large enough to select superior genotypes. In Stockem et al we analyzed the effect of plot dimensions on error variation for different traits, and we provide equations to estimate the expected variation for different plot dimensions [ 66 ].…”

“…Uniformity trials were used for determining shape and size for field experiments in potato (Justesen 1932). Plot shape effect seems to be minor in trials testing potato hybrids (Stockem et al 2022). Fisher (1970) argued the degree of precision of a trial for estimating any mean depends on the replication number.…”
