Optimal power consumption based on new power spectral efficiency metric for wireless cellular networks

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new power spectral efficiency (PSE) metric, to quantify the spectral efficiency and the total required power to cover a certain area with a predefined received signal quality. This metric offers the possibility to find the optimal transmission power in each base station to cover the total given area with the minimum total consumed power. We start by deriving the closed-form expression of the maximum transmission range under Rayleigh fading environment. Based on the maximum transmi… Show more

“…We assume that the BS and RSs adopt ideal capacity achieving rate adaptation based on the instantaneous channel realisations. Specifically, the maximum supportable transmission rate is chosen after a certain MS has been selected (in order to approach the maximum rate, practical systems usually employ adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes [17–19] based on the instantaneous channel realisations. However, the detailed implementation of AMC schemes is beyond the scope of this work.).…”

“…More recently, the ASE of the emerging massive MIMO cellular systems was studied together with energy efficiency [16]. Omri and Hasna [17] adopted a new metric – power spectral efficiency to find the optimal transmission power at each BS, or the optimal number of BSs to cover the given area with minimum consumed power. In [18, 19], the authors introduced the concept of affected area and defined the new metric general ASE, based on which they evaluated the spectral and power efficiency of three different transmission scenarios.…”
