Optimal Selection of High-Performance Concrete for Post-Tensioned Girder Bridge Using Advanced Hybrid MCDA Method

Abstract: The selection of material solutions is a basic decision-making problem that occurs in engineering issues. It affects the entire life cycle of a building structure, its safe use, maintenance costs, and a need to meet requirements for sustainable development, including recycling. This paper aims at selection of the optimum composition of HPC designed for monolithic girder structures of post-tension bridges. For the analysis, a set of 12 new-generation concretes (HPC) was designed, made, and tested. A full-scope … Show more

“…Therefore, several researchers conclude that the correct selection of materials is one of the simplest and most efficient ways to incorporate sustainability in the construction industry [25,29,30]. Despite the relevance of optimizing the construction materials selection process, currently, in practice, this is still primarily done empirically, based on the engineers' knowledge and experience, rather than numerical approaches [30][31][32]. However, when associated with the lack of experience of the responsible professional, this heuristic approach prevents the available alternatives from being objectively compared [25,33], and the lowest price ends up prevailing as the most important choice criterion.…”

“…However, when associated with the lack of experience of the responsible professional, this heuristic approach prevents the available alternatives from being objectively compared [25,33], and the lowest price ends up prevailing as the most important choice criterion. Therefore, it is essential to develop a systematic decision model that helps team members to choose the most advantageous materials, based on well-defined, sustainable, and unambiguous criteria [23,32].…”

“…By conducting a series of static experiments on stainless steel reinforced concrete columns, Li Qingfu et al proposed a bearing capacity formula that should be followed when stainless steel reinforcement is used in bridge engineering, which lays the foundation for bridge engineering construction under corrosive environments [19]. El żbieta Janowska-Renkas et al provided a concrete material selection method based on the improved hybrid MCDA method, which is of great significance for improving the construction technology level of high-performance concrete post-tensioned girder bridges [20].…”
