“…In particular, Valentine and Johnson (2004) reported major diebacks of P. comosa on the east coast of Tasmania following above average SSTs during the summer/autumn period of 2001. These findings are also consistent with previous studies indicating heterogeneous effects of ocean warming on early developmental stages in P. comosa from different regions (Britton et al, 2020;Cumming et al, 2019;Flukes et al, 2015). Evidence of uneven effects have also been reported in a range of northern and southern hemisphere macroalgal species (Smale, 2020).…”

“…Similarly, in mature tetrasporangia of D. pulchra , the fibrillar mucous secreted from mucilage sacs aids the extrusion of tetraspores (Van Den Hoek et al, 1995). In P. comosa , eggs are typically still attached to the blade via mucilage after being released from the female conceptacle (Cumming et al, 2019). Bacteria from the parental thallus could thus attach to mucilage during this expulsion and release processes.…”

“…Fucoid algae, and especially perennial species (such as C. torulosa and C. uvifera), whilst generally slower growing (Jackson 1987) than laminarian species, generally exhibit oogamous, diplontic life cycles combined with the apical meristematic growth of the thallus (Womersley 1987). These characteristics allow for potentially easy spawning and seeded-twine production (Cumming et al 2019), reducing the costs associated with nursery production. Moreover, vegetative production from out-planted cuttings may be possible (Ito et al 2008;Kavale et al 2021).…”
