Worldwide, rising ocean temperatures are causing declines and range shifts in marine species. The direct effects of climate change on the biology of marine organisms are often well documented; yet, knowledge on the indirect effects, particularly through trophic interactions, is largely lacking. We provide evidence of ocean warming decoupling critical trophic interactions supporting a commercially important mollusc in a climate change hotspot. Dietary assessments of the Australian blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) indicate primary dependency on a widespread macroalgal species (Phyllospora comosa) which we show to be in state of decline due to ocean warming, resulting in abalone biomass reductions. Niche models suggest further declines in P. comosa over the coming decades and ongoing risks to H. rubra. This study highlights the importance of studies from climate change hotspots and understanding the interplay between climate and trophic interactions when determining the likely response of marine species to environmental changes.

Different marine seaweed species have been shown to harbour specific bacterial communities, however, the extent to which vertical symbiont transmission from parents to offspring contributes to host‐specificity is unclear. Here we use fluorescence and electron microscopy as well as 16S rRNA gene‐based community analysis to investigate symbiont transmission in members of the three major seaweed groups (green Chlorophyta, red Rhodophyta and brown Phaeophyceae). We found seaweeds employ diverse strategies to transfer symbionts to their progeny. For instance, the green Ulva australis does not appear to have the capacity for vertical transmission. In contrast, the brown Phyllospora comosa adopts a non‐selective vertical transmission. The red Delisea pulchra demonstrates weak selectivity in symbiont transmission, while the brown Hormosira banksii exhibits a strongly selective symbiont transfer. Mucilage on the gametes appears to facilitate vertical transmission and transferred bacteria have predicted properties that could support early development of the seaweeds. Previous meta‐analysis has indicated that vertical transmission is rare in aquatic compared to terrestrial environments, however, our results contribute to the growing evidence that this might not be the case and that instead vertical transmission with various degrees of symbiont selection occurs in the ecologically important group of seaweeds.

Exploration of Australian fucoids for aquaculture production has been limited, despite globally high regional diversity and endemism. Sargassum fusiforme (hijiki in Japanese) is amongst the most highly valued seaweeds worldwide for human consumption, but concerns about high arsenic concentrations limit importation into countries with strict safe-food regulations and standards. We investigated the temporal and small-scale spatial variation in distribution, abundance, growth (estimated by changes in length), reproduction (estimated from the number of fertile conceptacles per receptacle and/or percentage of reproductive branches) and biofouling of two Australian sargassaceous fucoids, Cystophora torulosa and Caulocystis uvifera, that show promise as low-arsenic alternatives to hijiki. Temporal variation was assessed by seasonal surveys in a single year, in which small-scale spatial variation was assessed at a single site for each species, comparing high-shore and low-shore for intertidal C. torulosa and distance from the shore for subtidal C. uvifera. For C. torulosa, no significant variation in distribution, abundance or reproduction was observed; however, growth peaked in winter. Moreover, biofouling of C. torulosa was minimal throughout the study. In contrast, significant temporal variation was observed for C. uvifera with peaks in growth and reproduction in spring, and biofouling in summer. In both species, reproductive output increased with thallus length. Whilst both species might be promising Australian hijiki analogues, the temporal and spatial consistency in reproduction and minimal biofouling may render cultivation of C. torulosa more practical for successful commercialisation than for C. uvifera. However, generality of our findings should be assessed at larger spatial and temporal scales.
