Summary Field‐oriented control (FOC) is one of the most effective techniques widely used in industry for speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor. However, the main drawback of such linear controller with cascade structure is its limited bandwidth to avoid large overshoots and ringing. This problem significantly increases the switching frequency. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a novel nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme for direct speed control of the permanent magnet synchronous motor to minimize the inverter switching frequency. The proposed NMPC suggests different sampling times in the prediction process to increase the prediction horizon. It also presents an incremental algorithm to reduce the computational time, rendering it suitable for real‐time applications. The performance of the proposed NMPC method is compared with an optimum FOC scheme via simulations performed by MATLAB/Simulink software. The results show that the proposed method provides improved speed tracking performance as well as lower electromagnetic torque ripple. In addition, the inverter average switching frequency with the proposed control approach is almost 10 times lower than that with the FOC approach.

Aim: This paper proposes constant switching frequency model predictive control (CSF-MPC) for a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) to improve the steady state and dynamic performance of the drive system. Methods: The conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) can be combined with a pulse width modulation (PWM) modulator due to an effective cost function optimization algorithm which is from the idea of dichotomy. In the algorithm, all the voltage vectors in the constrained vector plane are dynamically selected and calculated through iteration. The whole system including control algorithm and mathematical model of PMLSM is built and tested by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink. Besides, the control algorithm is tested in the FPGA controller through FPGA-in-the-Loop test. Results: With the modern digital processors or control hardware such as digital signal processors (DSPs) or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), the algorithm can be easily executed in less than 10-micro second. This is very proper for industrial applications. The proposed control algorithm is implemented on FPGA and tested by FPGA-in-the-Loop method. The proposed control algorithm can improve the performance of drive system greatly. Conclusion: The proposed CSF-MPC for PMLSM not only keeps the same dynamic transient performance as FCS-MPC but also greatly decreases the torque ripple in steady state. Furthermore, CSF-MPC is also robust to parameter variations. Simulation and FPGA-in-the-Loop results illustrate that CSF-MPC has an attractive performance for PMLSM drives.

Field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a model predictive control with constant switching frequency (MPC-CSF) for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is proposed. The basic finite states MPC (FS-MPC) can be combined with a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) modulator because of an effective cost function optimization algorithm in which voltage vectors are dynamically selected and calculated through iteration based on the idea similar to dichotomy. Using model-based design (MBD), MPC-CSF is implemented on an FPGA with parallel and pipeline processing techniques in short execution time. Functionality simulation analysis presents that MPC-CSF is much robust to parameter variations. Experimental results illustrate that MPC-CSF has good dynamic performance for PMSM drives.
