Optimal Vibration Control of a Model Frame Structure Using Piezoceramic Sensors and Actuators

Abstract: This research concerns the active vibration control of a three-story model structural frame by using piezoceramics smart materials, in particular lead zirconate titanate (PZT), in the form of patches. These PZT patches are surface-bonded on the structure and function as actuators and sensors. To assist the control design, system identification is first performed. To excite the frame for identification purposes, a sweep sinusoidal input is used to drive the PZT actuator patches, and then a sixth-order state spa… Show more

“…Since the crack in this period is much larger than the previous step from 1100 to 2100, the propagating stress wave attenuates more than the previous period. The cycles (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11) shown in the damage index are more clear than the previous cycles (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). In addition, the highest values of the damage index reached to one, which implies the concrete column was subject to severe damage in the maximum displacement of each cycle.…”

“…Step 2100, the concrete column was subject to five initial simulated pseudo-dynamic loading cycles (1)(2)(3)(4)(5), as shown in Figure 9. When load increased, the bottom cracks opened and the structural damage increased.…”

“…Piezoceramics with such attractive features as low cost, small size, wide bandwidth, and sensing and actuating functions have been widely researched in real-time active vibration control [6][7][8], stress-wave based communication [9][10][11], and structural health monitoring [12][13][14][15][16]. Another attractive feature of a piezoceramic transducer is the coupling between its electric impedance and the host structure's mechanical impedance.…”

“…It can be derived using Hamilton's principle and Lagrange variation theory. in [4], the system equations can be derived using Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method; There is other modeling way: identification modeling, in [5], this study presents results of multimodal vibration suppression of a smart flexible cantilever beam with piezoceramic actuator and sensor by suing a pole placement controller; in [6], V. SETHI and G. SONG put forward subspace identification after acquiring a model frame. Moreover the control laws for vibration suppression vary from one application aim to another.…”
