Optimal Virtual Slice Composition Toward Multi-Tenancy Over Hybrid OCS/OPS Data Center Networks

Abstract: Abstract-Multi-tenancy is a key feature of modern data centers. It allows for the existence of multiple independent virtual infrastructures, called virtual slices, on top of the same physical infrastructure, each one of them specially tailored to the tenants' needs. In such a scenario, an optimal mapping of the virtual slices plays a capital role towards an efficient utilization of the data center network resources, potentially saving costs for the data center owner. However, due to the increasing trend of bri… Show more

“…Such a process involves the mapping of the VMs and virtual links onto computing and network resources, respectively. Their joint mapping generally allows for an enhanced utilization of the underlying physical infrastructure, increasing the number of supported VDCs [6]. In this regard, a DA-DC architecture should further increase the number of allocated VDCs, since the different VMs may exploit its potentially higher computing resource utilization.…”

“…DA-DCs promise a dramatically higher utilization of the computing resources. This feature is especially beneficial when providing complex infrastructure services, such as VDCs [5], [6]. To the best of our knowledge, no studies exist to date quantifying the benefits of optically-interconnected DA-DCs for efficiently allocating VDC services.…”

“…The VON is then embedded according to a shortest path routing. Pages et al [298] have considered embeddings that minimize the required optical transponders. che2016cos c) Survivable Embedding: Survivability of a virtual optical network, i.e., its continued operation in the face of physical node or link failures, is important for many applications that require dependable service.…”

“…The optimization problem at hand consists on maximizing the number of VDCs to be mapped over a DC infrastructure with constrained capacity given a known set of VDC requests, as in our previous work presented in [12]. For this, we define as the request set.…”

“…The benefits of a joint mapping approach have been demonstrated in the literature (e.g. [12], [13]), increasing the acceptance of the VDCs. In this regard, it is the role of the orchestrator not to only provide the joint mapping of the VDCs but to also coordinate all the involved software services to achieve the desired deployment.…”
