Optimisation, benchmark testing and comparison of droop control variants in microgrids

Abstract: Grid-forming inverter control is recently discussed for bulk power systems and is already in use for islanded microgrids. A common control type is the droop control. Numerous variants of the basic droop control have been proposed. However, there is lack of performance comparison of the droop variants in literature. Their superiority has only been demonstrated for some specific microgrid scenarios. This work composes benchmark scenarios to assess and compare the applicability of droop control variants and also … Show more

“…m i and n i are selected respectively, as follows: mi=normalΔfPi,rated ${m}_{i}=\frac{{\Delta }f}{{P}_{i,rated}}$ ni=normalΔVQi,rated ${n}_{i}=\frac{{\Delta }V}{{Q}_{i,rated}}$ where, Δ f and Δ V are allowed frequency and voltage magnitude deviations and P i , rated and Q i , rated are rated active and reactive powers of that DER. The output voltage reference obtained by the droop characteristics is tracked by VCM [2, 4].…”

“…Therefore, controllers may be optimised using heuristic algorithms [60] or variants of the conventional droop used. In [61], the various droop control variants present in the literature were compared, including transient droop, angle power feedforward droop, and the virtual frame transformation droop.…”
