Optimisation of Two-sided Assembly Line Balancing with Resource Constraints Using Modified Particle Swarm Optimisation

Abstract: Two-sided Assembly Line Balancing (2S-ALB) is important in assembly plants that produce large-sized high-volume products, such as in automotive production. The 2S-ALB problem involves different assembly resources such as worker skills, tools, and machines required for the assembly. This research modelled and optimised the 2S-ALB with resource constraints. In the end, besides having good workload balance, the number of resources can also be optimised. For optimisation purpose, Particle Swarm Optimisation was mo… Show more

“…This is reasonable as the two optimization techniques were performed on the same source. Therefore, the comparison will be more reasonable than using the root equation from an entirely different approach, as common in the literature . The GA optimized the RSM model’s independent variables to the responses’ optimum values (MY and CV).…”

“…Therefore, the comparison will be more reasonable than using the root equation from an entirely different approach, as common in the literature. 46 The GA optimized the RSM model’s independent variables to the responses’ optimum values (MY and CV). The first procedure in the generated GA was to create a fitness function by generating a MATLAB function where the parameters to be optimized were specified.…”

“…After that, the workload maximization of stations was used as the measure of load balance [28], an exact algorithm was designed, and its effectiveness was verified through an engineering project. Abdullah Make and Ab Rashid [29] carried out a study on load balancing of TALs in automobile assembly workshops and designed a particle swarm optimization algorithm. To obtain a better task assignment scheme, in addition to cycle time and stations, the influences and constraints of workers' skill levels, tools, and equipment on assembly task assignment were also considered.…”
