Abstract:An array of pulse-emitting oscillators capable of emerging collective behavior is investigated by computer simulations and through a simple experimental setup. The oscillators emit pulse-like signals and detect the signal emitted by the others. They have stochastically fluctuating periods and can operate in two different modes, one with a short output pulse and one with a longer one. The switching between modes is governed by a simple optimization rule: whenever the total output in the system is lower than a d… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
