Optimization of Bio-Foamed Concrete Brick Strength via Bacteria Based Self-Healing and Bio-Sequestration of CO2

Abstract: This research aimed to optimize the compressive strength of bio-foamed concrete brick (B-FCB) via a combination of the natural sequestration of CO2 and the bio-reaction of B. tequilensis enzymes. The experiments were guided by two optimization methods, namely, 2k factorial and response surface methodology (RSM). The 2k factorial analysis was carried out to screen the important factors; then, RSM analysis was performed to optimize the compressive strength of B-FCB. Four factors, namely, density (D), B. tequilen… Show more

“…According to the British Cement Association-1994, the maximum size of fine aggregate (sand) in foamed concrete is 1.18 mm. Additionally, the percentage of sand passed through 600 microns should be between 60-90% to produce foamed concrete as shown in the particle size distribution of sand in Figure 1 [21,22]. The sand was adapted to pass through a sieve with a size of 1 mm according to BS 882-1992 [20].…”

“…These pollutants cause air pollution and lead to the greenhouse effect. For the time being, the biological and geological approach could be adopted for CO 2 sequestration [5]. In addition, obtaining aggregates from quarries and rivers sides lead to the depletion of natural resources.…”

“…The self-healing mechanism is produced because of chemical reactions of a self-healing agent embedded directly, embedded in capsules or introduced through vascular networks when designing and making the concrete mixture. Among the most used systems are superabsorbent polymers [9], [10], crystalline mixtures [11], [12], microencapsulated sodium silicate [13], tubes with adhesives [14][15][16] and bacteria [17][18][19][20].…”
