Optimization of dietary zinc for egg production and antioxidant capacity in Chinese egg-laying ducks fed a diet based on corn-wheat bran and soybean meal

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of zinc supplementation on productive performance and antioxidant status in laying ducks. Five-hundred-four laying ducks were divided into 7 treatments, each containing 6 replicates of 12 ducks. The ducks were caged individually and fed a corn-soybean meal and wheat bran basal diet (37 mg Zn/kg) or the basal diet supplemented with 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, or 90 mg Zn/kg (as zinc sulfate). During the early laying period of 10 d (daily egg production <80%), egg product… Show more

“…Attia et al [ 62 ] showed that in male White Pekin ducks, maximizing the body weight gain from 1 to 56 d requires diets supplemented with 30 mg Zn/kg, whereas 120 mg Zn/kg is needed to reduce body fat deposition and improve meat quality. However, 30 mg Zn/kg in the diet is adequate for improving the performance of Longyan laying ducks during the peak laying period [ 63 ].…”

“…MDA is an indicator of lipid peroxidation that indicates the oxidative damage of cells [25]. Regardless of the source, supplementation of Zn can promote the formation of metallothionein, remove free radicals in the body, inhibit lipid peroxidation in vivo, reduce the content of MDA, and increase Cu/Zn-SOD [26]. In our previous studies, we found that 40 and 80 mg/kg MHA-Zn group had a higher content of zinc in the liver than the control group, and the level of metallothionein (MT) mRNA expression in the liver was highest in the 80 mg/kg MHA-Zn group [10].…”

“…The egg shape index was calculated as (width/length) Â 100. Eggshell breaking strength was measured on the vertical axis using an Egg Force Reader (model EFR-01, ORKA Food Technology, Ramat HaSharon, Israel) (Chen et al 2017). Albumen height, yolk colour, and Haugh unit of each egg were measured on the day of collection using an Egg Analyser (model EA-01, ORKA).…”
