Optimization of fish oil extraction from Lophius litulon liver and fatty acid composition analysis

Abstract: The Lophius litulon liver was used as raw material for the extraction of fish oil via various extraction methods. The extraction rate by water extraction, potassium hydroxide (KOH) hydrolysis and protease hydrolysis were compared and the results revealed the protease hydrolysis extraction had a higher extraction rate with good protein-lipid separation as observed by optical microscope. Furthermore, subsequent experiments determined neutrase to be the best hydrolytic enzyme in terms of extraction rate and cost.… Show more

“…They contain lipids, proteins, and minerals that can be utilized to produce fish oil and fish protein hydrolysates (Nikoo et al., 2022). Fish oil from the head or liver (Baloch et al., 2023; Hu et al., 2022; Vázquez et al., 2022) and shrimp oils from cephalothorax or hepatopancreas (Pascual‐Silva et al., 2022; Raju & Benjakul, 2022) are rich in n − 3 fatty acids, known for their numerous health benefits and can be used as a nutritional supplement. Shrimp oil rich in astaxanthin can serve as an excellent source of natural antioxidants as well as food colorants (Gulzar et al., 2020).…”

“…The optimization of the extraction parameters was aimed to maximizing the extraction yield while preserving the qualities of the oil. To meet up with these goals, the criteria set for each response were defined as minimizing the Peroxide value, the Acid value and maximizing the extraction yield based on the example of [18].…”

“…The positive signs of X1 and X3 shows that they contribute positively to improve the yield of fish oil while the negative sign of X2 shows that the proportions of viscera/water could have a negative contribution at a certain extent. All the same, the sign of the quadratic coefficients give the nature of the contributions of various factors on the response [18].…”
