Optimization of Ionogel Polymer Electrolytes Composition for Their Best Performance in Electric Double Layer Capacitor

Abstract: The application of a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) in electrochemical devices such as batteries, electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs), and others is a known topic in the literature. However, GPE with improved ionic conductivity and better mechanical properties are highly desired. In this work, ionogel polymer electrolytes (IGPEs) were synthesized by photopolymerization of a mixture of monomers: aliphatic urethane diacrylate, 1,3,5-triallyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione, trimethylolpropane tr… Show more

“…Electrolytes primarily consist of solute salts and solvents, in which the solute salts provide ions and the solvents facilitate pathways for the transport of these electrolyte ions. The electrolytes can be classified into liquid electrolytes and solid electrolytes [28,29], and the liquid electrolytes can be further classified into aqueous electrolytes and non-aqueous electrolytes according to the types of solvents. The liquid electrolytes used in EDLCs include aqueous and organic electrolytes and pure ILs (Table 1).…”

“…Specifically, the ionic liquid of 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMImNTf 2 ) can be used as the plasticizer for swelling the polymer matrix constructed by thiol–ene chemistry, with the thiols in the reaction supplied from PETMP while the enes in the reaction supplied from trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), aliphatic urethane diacrylate (AUDA), or 1,3,5‐triallyl‐1,3,5‐triazine‐2,4,6(1 H ,3 H ,5 H )‐trione (TATT), respectively. [ 178 ] The ionic conductivity of the synthesized GPEs mainly increases with enhancing PETMP content and decreases with enhancing TMPTA content in the polymer backbone. Additionally, the mechanical performance depends mostly on the crosslinking density of the polymer framework.…”

“…Thus, immobilizing ionic liquid in a hybrid host is ascribed to forming a solid form with good stretchability and transparency. The resultant composite, also known as ionogel, which combines the properties of ionic liquid and mechanical integrity from the polymer matrix, has been applied in different areas such as proton-exchange membranes [11], strain sensors [12], temperature sensors [13], pressure sensor [14], and electric layer double capacitor [15].…”
